If you’re looking for a quick and rewarding adventure in Star Valley, the hike to Slide Lake is a must-do, especially in early summer while the lake is still full.
The trailhead is tucked behind Cottonwood Lake in Smoot, WY, and follows a mellow 3.5-mile out-and-back route with about 500 feet of elevation gain. The path is well-defined and easy to follow, making it a great option for families, casual hikers, or anyone looking for a peaceful getaway into the mountains.
The trail winds through forested terrain and opens up to reveal Slide Lake, a small alpine lake surrounded by rocky slopes and wildflowers. The lake fills up with snowmelt in early summer but tends to dry out later in the season, so now’s the perfect time to visit! We even spotted a curious marmot hanging out near the shoreline, soaking up the sun.
For those looking to extend the adventure, you can continue on the trail for a few more miles to reach Wagner Lake, another beautiful alpine lake that stays fuller later in the season.
With minimal effort and maximum payoff, Slide Lake is the kind of hike that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret spot. Pack a snack, bring your camera, and enjoy the quiet beauty of this lesser-known trail just above Cottonwood Lake.
